Product Updates for EDB Backup Tooling

As a result of bringing the EDB and 2ndQuadrant product portfolios together, we're excited to share important directional changes in our backup tooling, specifically on Barman, pgBackRest, and Backup and Recovery Tool (BART):

  • EDB has selected Backup and Recovery Manager (Barman) to be the new strategic backup tool
  • EDB has selected pgBackRest as an additional supported Open Source backup tool.
  • EDB will continue to support BART for at least the next 18 months, but it will not receive any new features or enhancements. BART will not be supported for PostgreSQL or EDB Postgres Advanced Server versions v14 and above.

New Supported Tools Added to Subscriptions

Two new backup tools are being added to the EDB portfolio: Backup and Recovery Manager (Barman) and pgBackRest. All current subscription customers can use either of these fully -supported tools without additional license expense.

Barman is our recommended tool for backup and recovery of PostgreSQL and EDB Postgres Advanced Server data in business-critical environments. Barman relies on the robust and reliable Point-In-Time Recovery technology found in Postgres allowing DBAs to manage a complete catalog of backups from - and recover to - multiple remote servers, all from a single location. Barman is an open-source tool maintained by EDB and distributed under GNU GPL 3.

pgBackRest is an alternative open source option, widely used in the industry and commonly requested by customers. It is an easy-to-use tool that enables your organization to implement backup and recovery solutions for PostgreSQL EDB Postgres Advanced Server data. EDB collaborates with the pgBackRest community to release new stable versions with exciting enhancements and improved documentation. Additionally, we test and release pgBackRest as part of the EDB portfolio.

What will happen to BART?

EDB will continue to support BART for customers reliant on the current supported versions, but the future of EDB backup tooling is Barman and pgBackRest. BART will no longer receive any new features or enhancements, but will continue to receive patches and bug fixes. BART will not be supported for PostgreSQL and EDB Postgres Advanced Server versions v14 and above.

We will be providing additional information in the near future on migrating from BART to either Barman or pgBackRest. Please reach out to backup-feedback@enterprisedb.com for any immediate questions or feedback.
