EDB strives to bring you the most performant and up-to-date software possible for PostgreSQL - The World's Most Advanced Open Source Database. A key part of this process is the retirement of obsolete versions of the supported operating systems and replacing them with newer, more powerful and secure options. Following is EDB’s position on CentOS Linux 8 and its various viable alternatives.

CentOS Linux 8

In December 2020, Red Hat and CentOS announced that the lifecycle of CentOS Linux 8 operating system has been cut short and CentOS Linux 8 – as a rebuild of RHEL 8 – will end December 2021. EDB sent out a technical alert in February 2021 notifying our stance in compliance with Red Hat’s decision. EDB Software support on CentOS 8 has therefore reached its end of life. CentOS Linux 8 should not be considered for use in production environments and we strongly urge our customers to migrate to a supported platform if you’ve not already done so. For any migration assistance, please reach out to us at  customersuccess@enterprisedb.com.

Rocky Linux 8 and AlmaLinux 8

As a result of CentOS Linux 8’s accelerated end of life, various RHEL binary-compatible (CentOS8 drop-in) replacements emerged, notably:

  • Rocky Linux 8
  • AlmaLinux 8

EDB is committed to support its customers through this transition and pleased to announce EDB software portfolio (version 11, 12, 13, 14 and Tools) support for these aforementioned RHEL 8 binary compatible alternatives. The software is available as native rpm packages available in EDB yum repository. A few important things to note:

  • Users of these operating systems will be supported based on the continued position of the projects that they remain binary compatible with RHEL 8.
  • EDB will continue to produce and test software on RHEL 8 and reserves the right to require that an issue reported on these distributions is reproduced on RHEL 8 directly.
  • Should any of these distributions break the RHEL binary compatibility, EDB would need to reevaluate its position for that platform support.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7 and 8 and CentOS Linux 7

EDB expects to continue to support our software on RHEL 7, RHEL 8, and CentOS Linux 7 through their life cycles.

CentOS Stream

CentOS Stream is not a replacement for CentOS Linux; it tracks just ahead of a current RHEL release serving as its upstream (development) branch. CentOS Stream is a rolling release, updates can come at any time and it may break binary compatibility with RHEL. It will not inherit the stability and robustness of RHEL and will not be suitable for production deployments. EDB therefore does not support its software on CentOS Stream.
